Nathalie Emmanuel
Nathalie Joanne Emmanuel(born 2 March 1989) is an English actress. Emmanuel began her career as a theatre actor in the late 1990s. She was involved in roles in West End musicals like The Lion King. She started her acting career in the year 2006 in Sasha Valentine, a soap opera. Following that she was a part of several British TV shows which included the sequel Maze Runner. Her mother is Dominican. Her dad is half Saint Lucian, half English. Her older brother is also a member of the family. Emmanuel remembered that her mother first took notice of her desire and passion to pursue a career as an actor during her time at the independent St Hilda's School, which closed in 2014, and then later Westcliff High School for Girls grammar school. She stated that she first noticed her love for acting when she was only three years old. Her mother advised her to enroll in dancing, singing and acting classes. In the West End production of The Lion King Young Nala played the character as Young Nala. In the next year, she was cast in Game of Thrones as Missandei, Daenerys Targaryen’s interpreter. She told Jimmy Kimmel that she heard about her being chosen for the role while working as a store assistant in the clothing store. Emmanuel was promoted to an official cast member on the show in 2015. Missandei was the only female from a different race in the cast. The scene in which she died while she was in chains wasn't popular among viewers. Emmanuel later said to The Guardian that the reaction to the death of Missandei was so strong because she was the one. I'm convinced that many of the people who felt othered or disenfranchised felt a connection with her or felt they were represented by her particularly women of colour. It was incredibly difficult to be able to let people see her disappear, particularly when it was done in the way she was treated. This is how they're going make the sole woman of color.
